Billy Cobham was born in Panama and at the age of three left there for New York with his parents. The work he is currently doing with Asere is part of a process in which he is re-connecting with his latin roots.
Asere
first met Billy at the invitation of the Womad organisation when he
guested with the band at several festivals, in the UK, Spain, Greece,
Sri Lanka and Singapore. At these events all involved felt the potential
for a powerful collaboration.
Legend is no idle noun when it comes to Billy Cobham - his story
is so huge that one can only list some of the many greats this legendary
drummer, composer and innovator has played and sparred with over
the years: Miles Davies, Horace Silver, Stan Getz, Freddy Hubbard,
George Benson, Donny Hathaway, Roberta Flack, Dexter Gordon, John
McLaughlin, Jack Bruce, Tito Puente, Zakir Hussein, Herbie Hancock,
Gil Evans, Stanley Clarke, Lucky Dube, McCoy Tyner and so on. Billy’s dazzling skills have created
him a faithful following world-wide. Regarded as one of the best drummers
ever, Cobham’s playing combines great power and rhythmic dexterity
with sensitivity and subtlety.
